Kindness and Dementia: A Crucial Aspect of Care

We’re all well aware of how important it can be to show kindness to those around us. However, some individuals may need more kindness than others, especially those with dementia.

That’s why kind dementia care can make a world of difference to the lives of those experiencing symptoms.

As people get older, and symptoms worsen, it can become harder to communicate, leading to feelings of isolation. However, kindness can provide a unique way of building connections and boosting mental wellbeing.

Kindness and wellbeing

Kindness has been scientifically proven to improve mental wellbeing. It’s no surprise, though, as, through acts of compassion, we can all make connections with others and strengthen our sense of community. In turn, this works effectively to reduce any negative feelings, such as isolation.

In a study published in Clinical Psychological Science, researchers found that there is a natural way to help relieve the impact of stress on health, and that is through helping others.

When we receive kindness from others, we all experience a lift of joy, a feeling that can benefit others by improving their emotional health.

The meaning behind kindness can differ from person to person, but for us, it’s all about compassion. Here at The Beeches Residential Home, we consistently check in with our residents and their wellbeing to ensure we’re working to support their individual needs.

For others, kindness is all about giving. Small acts of kindness, like a compliment or a gift, can work to build the connections between people, helping them to feel joy and friendship.

How to show kindness

We can show kindness to people in many different ways. Older people, especially those with dementia, can find it hard to communicate. However, by taking things slow and steady, even finding other methods to support them communicate, can show them care and kindness.

Frequent visits can also be a great way of showing kindness. Ask them how they are, enjoy some activities and spend quality time together. This will boost their wellbeing and ensure they continue to have something to look forward to.

Distance can be a problem, so if you’re unable to visit your loved ones, a phone call or video call can be another great way of catching up.

Undoubtedly one of the best ways to show kindness is through small acts of kindness. Our resident’s loved ones are frequently sending small gifts and tokens of their love that never fail to brighten the day. Our Ixworth community also show compassion with regular donations of sweet treats!

But overall, it’s crucial to really pay attention to what your loved ones need. Whether it’s merely making life a little simpler for them by picking up some shopping, or something more significant, it all makes a difference.
